Re: Call for Help from western Ukraine (Transcarpathia)
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Unfortunately I have to report again after 2 ˝ years about another catastrophic
flood in the region of Transcarpathia. On Saturday, March 3rd, 2001 the
level of the Theiss was still 34 cm deep, but in 2 days the water rose over
7 meters. The cause was heavy rainfall and the result of snow melting in
the Carpathian Mountains.
Since last night (March 6th, 2001) the dike broke through in several
places, so that over 200 localities with roughly 12,000 houses are partly
or totally standing in water. There have already been some fatalities, the
exact number is unknown. Several houses have become ruins.
The disaster is roughly 30% greater that the one in November 1998, to which the Transcarpathia Benefit Society immediately reacted. Even the villages of Mezövári (Pastor Sándor Zán), und Feketeardó, where new houses have been built, are more seriously affected today than 2 years ago. According to the latest information from Ibolya Molnár (a resident of Feketeardó) there are over 100 destroyed houses in Feketeardó (Tschornotisov).
Nobody counted on this catastrophe repeating after 2 years. The people could hardly have prepared for it in 2 days. The people are being rescued from many places by helicopter, since the route to the villages at the moment is impassable either by truck or tractor. Everyone is trying also to save the livestock somehow (swine, cattle, goats, rabbits, etc.), but often without success.
The need is very great. Now I am sending this report and asking you to pass this along as a matter of prayer.
Sincerely,
Sándor Molnár, SMW-Transcarpathia
